The weekend involves training in active listening skills and talks on various topics relevant to the student body. We are part of the national charity, the Nightline Association, which operates in over 40 universities around the UK! Concordia Student Nightline. Volunteering with Nightline has helped me build my confidence – as it is the first society I properly got involved in, it has really really helped in terms of personal growth! There are 42 Nightlines associated with Universities across the UK and ROI. Listeners are the anonymous individuals who are trained in active listening and volunteer their time for shifts, thereby allowing Nightline to function at the University of Dundee. You can meet Nightline’s Public Faces at Fresher’s Fayre, and other campus events during the recruitment process. Nightline is a listening service that is run by student volunteers solely, for students. In return for your annual affiliation fee, you’ll benefit from all the wonderful aspects of Nightline. As a Nightline volunteer, you will develop skills such as active listening, teamwork empathy and more. If you have a desire to give pack to the student community and help support to your fellow students, Aberdeen Nightline is a great place to volunteer. This means that every night, two student volunteers will be available throughout the night, to answer phone calls and reply to instant messages from other students who want to talk. Nightline has two anonymous listening volunteers of different gender identities on shift every night that halls of residence are open. This workshop will be an interactive event to introduce you to concepts, strategies and resources for active listening. The importance of Active Listening Nightline volunteers are trained in active listening skills, allowing them to support students in a non-directive and non-advisory manner. Volunteering for Nightline can be challenging but also hugely rewarding. The intensive training programme will help you develop many specific skills, including communication and active listening. Here at Bath Nightline we have many volunteers to keep our service running smoothly working from 8pm to 8am, every day of the semester answering calls, IMs and emails.
