MPAA Rating: unrated, violence, sexual situations, Cast: Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Ari Cohen, Jennifer Laporte, Chandra West, Lochlyn Munroe and Paul McGaffey. Both shows exploit that setup for visual and tonal variety — stakeouts and chases alternating with brittle arguments in paneled chambers. The Spiral is a highly stark depiction of a man's crippling depression that saturates you in misery for the entire runtime. Bowyer-Chapman has to carry the film, and he does — believably depicting Malik’s loosening grip on reality, not seeing what the viewer has leapt ahead to conclude. It is the ninth installment in the Saw film series and stars Chris Rock, Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson.. Aaron (Ari Cohen) and Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) figure this fresh start — a move to boost Aaron’s career — is just what they need, the peace and quiet of small town life. Malik, a younger man who came out early and grew up to be a writer, appreciates that. Caroline Dubois/Son et Lumière, via Canal+. Season 8, whose 10 episodes aired in France in September and begin streaming Tuesday on MHz Choice, carries on a series-long exploration of the need to break the rules in a justice system hobbled by bureaucracy, careerism and politics. He’s in prison after taking the fall for their most recent well-intentioned criminality, and she’s back in charge of a unit that has been sidelined and is enjoying partial custody of the infant daughter she was incapable of caring for in the previous season. The parallel breaks down right away, though, because “Spiral” is an altogether more contemporary show, an 8-to-12-episode serial with season-long murder mysteries and A, B and C plots that converge and intertwine in mostly clever and (by the standards of TV crime drama) believable ways. The long-running crime drama “Spiral” — its title in France, where it premiered on Canal+ back in 2005, is “Engrenages,” or “Gears” — does not take place in a postcard Paris. REVIEW: Spiral (S7 E1&2/12) Zut alors! ... Write A Review. Aaron may head off to work each day, and Kayla takes her shot at being the exotic ” new girl in school,” but Malik is at home — tapping away on a PC, “ghost writing” the biography of some academic shaker and mover. A Shudder release. As with the other foreign series I have reviewed, Spiral has a central, season-long storyline with several side stories and cases along the way. Film/Television. Spiral is available on Netflix Canada. Netflix has established itself as the home of true crime documentaries and its latest offering is a corker. Director Kurtis David Harder (“Kody Fitz”) struggles to make this story an “Is it real or is this all in his head?” thriller, and have it all make sense. And the camera keeps coming back to an appropriate Parisian landmark, Renzo Piano’s towering courthouse on the city’s northwestern fringe — stark, unadorned, impossible to look away from. With Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan David Jones, Ali Johnson. Malik is, as we say these days, “triggered.” He has flashbacks to a hate crime of his youth. The final season balances Laure and Ali’s murder investigation with Gilou’s infiltration of a nightclub owner’s shady enterprises — an endeavor Gilou hopes will earn him reinstatement to the force — and adds an arc for the ruthless defense lawyer Joséphine Karlsson (Audrey Fleurot), whose redemptive path continues when she becomes a surrogate mother for another young Moroccan. A socially-conscious horror film doesn’t require sharp commentary to be effective, but it should at least use its stylistic elements to explore our most painful, unaddressed feelings about the issue at hand. Even dismembered corpses have a cold and twisted gorgeousness about them. Tourist landmarks and picturesque boulevards are scant; the Eiffel Tower occasionally appears in the hazy distance, like a mirage. All; Available now (12) Next on (0) Back up to: Spiral. Jackson and due out next year, doesn’t quite come off. And the Paris police officers of “Spiral” are cut from the same rough cloth. “Spiral” may be an unusually tense, granular and absorbing cop show, but it’s still a cop show. Kayla (Jennifer Laporte), Aaron’s daughter from his just-ended marriage, is an eye-rolling teen who doesn’t judge her dad’s new love. As the film crawls toward its conclusion, there’s a sense that the “Spiral” here is going straight down the drain. Use the HTML below. AIRED ON 10/26/2019 Season 7, Episode 6. Made by Canal+, Spiral has always packed action with intrigue, but is probably best loved for its cast of characters and excellent acting. Vintage cars and an ancient, homophobic Patrick Buchanan red meat “values” speech on the radio tell us this is the mid-90s. While the realism of the procedural format is stretched pretty thin, the show has plot lines that simply force you to keep watching.
